I’m off to “the lounge room” – my favourite pub which has very comfy couches in the lounge bar and the rugby on tv!
I’m currently reading “Tom Brown’s Schooldays” – it’s so great! Of course in line with the theme of the post because his school was – Rugby…
“Thomas Hughes’ classic novel Tom Brown’s Schooldays. By an Old Boy. was published in 1857, but deals with life at Rugby School in the 1830’s – just after William Webb Ellis, the legendary creator of the rugby game, would have graduated.”
It’s fantastic! I have such a Victoriana (and earlier) fetish – not that there’s much traditional fetish sort of content – but I just love the whole “school days” sort of thing – I think I’m going to collect classic school stories!
I suspect the whole Victoriana thing may have come from when I was a little girl – we had a copy of Mrs Beeton’s book of household management (still do in fact) – that a great great aunt acquired in the early 1900’s – it’s so wonderful! I always fantasised about having a whole household of servants – though I suspect the pay scale Mrs Beeton advised may not be current!
